From Christian Powerlifters of America; Interview with Ernie Beath (Post Accident)
by Mike Loveless for CPOA
On November 22, 2007 it was reported at CPOA and here at Maryland Powerlifting that Marylander, Ernie Beath, from Maryland's eastern shore, had a serious lifting accident which resulted in him losing his sight in one eye.
Ernie's first interview with CPOA was on December 6, 2006. What follows is the second interview where Ernie describes the accident and how his faith and the support of others has helped him during his recovery.
CPOA: Hey Ernie, can you give us some background info about yourself again? You conducted an interview with us awhile back, but would like to refresh everyone.
Ernie: I would be glad too…I am 26 years old and am from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I have a Home Improvement/Handyman business called Cross Beams Home Improvement. I am about 6ft3 380lbs and mix Strongman, Powerlifting, and Olympic lifting in my training.
CPOA: Ernie, you just recently went through a tough situation with an accident, can you tell us what happened?
Ernie: My family and I had taken a cross country trip…We arrived home at about midnight, and I went to my garage to do some lifting. I was ending with some partial benches from the pins in my rack, I was on my last set of my last rep, when one of the pins had a mishap and 765lbs landed on my face. It knocked me out…When I awakened, I knew something wasn’t right. My whole body felt like it was vibrating. I really thought that this might be it as far as my life on earth…but the Lord allowed me to be completely calm with no fear. I simply asked for forgiveness. I crawled into my house and got help. The ambulance came and took me to our local hospital, and then the local hospital took me to Shock Trauma in Baltimore Md. I stayed there for a couple days. My outcome was a bunch of fractures and breaks in my face, a bone going into my brain and causing it to bleed, and also resulting in being blind in my right eye.
CPOA: Ernie, what pulled you through this tough and trying time?
Ernie: Number one the Lord made this situation as easy as it could possibly be. He sewed up my bleeding brain. They were going to have to perform multiple surgeries, and they didn’t even need to perform one. I am so thankful and Blessed.
My family has also stuck right by my side through this situation. They have been there every step of the way. I don’t even consider it a bad incident, I just consider it something that has happened in my life.
CPOA: Is there a certain scripture that sticks out going through this?
Ernie: My family held tight to all the healing verses in the Bible. They as well as I, stuck to them strongly.
CPOA: How is your mother and what support has your family given you? Your mother had emailed me and asked us to pray for you! We know there was great concern then!
Ernie: She is doing great…She has been so supportive of this situation. I remember while this was happening in the early stages(the first night), I was continually asking the paramedics and nurses how she was doing because, well she is a typical mom! But the Lord gave her peace of mind through this situation as well.
CPOA: Are you back to work now or rehabilitating? Can you give us the extent of the injuries?
Ernie: Oh I am back completely! And guess what? Stronger then ever! I am stronger then before the injury…I keep hitting pr’s every week. And I am back working as well. Things are great! I couldn’t ask for more!
CPOA: Through this whole trial that the Lord has given you, what have you learned the most about the situation?
Ernie: I have learned that prayer definitely works! And that the Lord is DEFINITELY right by your side! Cling to HIM! You also really learn who your true friends are as well.
CPOA: Do you have any final comments brother?
Ernie: Thank you very much for this interview and thank you to Christian Powerlifters of America for all the prayers and support!
