Fourth Annual Halloween Bench Press
By Shelly Fulton- Manager Westminster Family Center
And Jim Roberts- The Maryland Powerlifting Report

Cold…windy…downpours…it was a miserable day on Saturday, October 25, 2008, but it could not dampen the spirits of the crowd at the Westminster Family Center’s fourth annual Halloween Bench Press. World Champion, Scott Bixler presided over the event and pumped up the crowd of spectators to cheer on the 27 contestants. GNC (Westminster) and Phil's Lawn Care provided the contestants with commemorative T-shirts and a hospitality bag of GNC products. Tim Fulton and Joe Hanson stacked and spotted. Michele Bahn came down from York to announce the meet and Jim Roberts, writer for Maryland Powerlifting News, enlisted the help of Team Compass (from Sport Fit in Bowie, MD). Team Compass, led by Keith Barrett, served as referees and spotter/loaders. Keith’s teammates include; Jeff Lanouette, Josh Gray and Matt Foxcroft.

The event culminated in a moving presentation of an extra award for 76 year old Don Joy…Comeback Lifter of the Year. Don needed an operation for a heart blockage, but was also threatened by a blood clot. He is still recuperating and had to limp to the stage, but he managed to press 300lbs. and capture the Best Lifter award in the Master’s Division.
