IPF News:

Tested Lifters- updated 8/11/08

August 15, 2008- by Robert Wilks

IPF/POWERLIFTING

The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Executive today announced it's ratification of the 2009 World Anti-Doping Code & a set of Anti-Doping Rules based on the Code.

The new IPF Anti-Doping Rules were derived in conjunction with the World Anti-Doping Agency & have been approved by that body as consistent with the WADA Code.

The IPF has long been at the forefront of the war on drugs in sport. By measures such as a vigorous out-of-competition testing programme, target testing & athlete education the IPF has turned around the doping issue in its sport.

The new Code & Rules will further strengthen the IPF's hand in dealing with doping. Measures such as more clearly defining the Whereabouts criteria & mandatory provisional suspensions will tighten detection & deterrence, whilst the streamlining of Therapeutic Use Exemptions will allow for a greater focus of resources on front-line anti-doping activities. Flexible sanctions, taking into account all the features of particular cases, will promote fairness & credibility for the IPF’s anti-doping system.

The 2009 IPF Anti-Doping Rules will take effect on 1st January next.

Robert Wilks, Chair Anti-Doping Commission

Night of the Living Dead Travel and Roster Updates- by Alex Campbell

We are about 5 weeks away and only 3 from the entry deadline for the NOTLD Glory meet. Things are looking great for both meets with 20 people committed by having already sent in their entries or told me they are in the mail. We have 15 males with every male having pulled 640 pounds in a full meet, more than 10 having pulled 700 or more in copmpetition, 7 pulling 750 or more, and 2 pulling 800 or more. We ahve about 5 females with every one pulling 2.9 times their bodyweight or more and most of those were in ful meets.

Here is the hotel info for the NOTLD. I have secured rooms for $59.99 per night (plus tax of course) at the Comfort Inn in Johnson City, TN. The phone number is (423) 928-9600. The address is 1900 S. Roan St. Johnson City, TN 37601. You must mention my name, Alex Campbell, and it would not hurt to say you were with the Night of the Living Dead. This hotel is about 5 miles from the meet site and has restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, etc, all within walking distance and is just a couple of hundred yards off of Interstate 26. Lifters have stayed here in the past and recommended it as a nice hotel for the price.

If you prefer, there is another hotel, the Traveler’s Inn in Elizabethton TN, that is within walking distance of the meet site and within easy walking distance of many restaurants, grocery stores, etc. The phone number is (423) 543-3344. The address is 505 W. Elk Ave. Elizabethton, TN 57643. We could not work out a room discount, but it is only $69 for a weekend rate. It does have a free continental breakfast. I did have lifters stay there last year and say it was fine for the price. I just wanted people to know that this is an option if you did not have a car or wanted a closer hotel, etc.

Neither of these hotels have been used as meet hotels before, and we are hoping that both of these will offer every lifter some option that make them the most comfortable.

USPF News:

Affiliation with the GPC- Courtney Stanley announced the following;

There are many virtues of having a Federation that embraces both Multi-ply lifters and the Single-ply lifters. The GPC and USPF both believe in credible lifting with reasonable gear rules. Both Feds have similar rules and equipment standards, with the notable exception of the number of ply's allowed. Both require closed back shirts......Both allow Mono-Lifts...Both enforce strict rules of performance that contribute to, Lifting Performance Credibility. The bottom line is more lifters at future USPF/GPC Meets.
Meet director's now have the option of running a "Two Platform" Meet. Lifters can enter in"Stream A" and conform to USPF Single-ply requirements...or Lift in "Stream B" and conform to GPC requirements of performance. There can be Monolifts used for both standards or have Squat Stands on one side and a Monolift on the other. It's actually a very flexible plan that allows Meet Directors considerable latitude. It also allows lifters latitude to persue the type of lifting they feel confortable with. This "style" of lifting is already being utilized in Europe....with other Federations with Multiple Standards.

The Federation feels that attendance at meets will only INCREASE with these options.
I might also point out that the GPC has a very large well established International footprint, that can co-exist well with the WPF.......30 + Countries to be exact.

This beginning is indeed very exciting. We are headed down a path that we feel will significantly impact the numbers of lifters in our meets, and expose to the Powerlifting Community, that indeed there is broad range of lifters who will be enthusiastic about USPF/GPC Meets.

We also welcome American GPC members into the USPF umbrella of Meet Directors and State Chairs. You guy's will now have many more opportunities to compete and form a US National team.....that will compete at GPC Worlds.

There is much work to do regarding implementation
of this arrangement...Fortunately we have some of the most experienced administrators in Powerlifting to help....Bob Packer is a great asset to help with the Multi-ply world and the World of Monolifts...and Dave Jeffrey is certainly experienced at all types of Powerlifting events.
