Ok..., I took a week off! I needed it!!! I'm also beginning to have a hard time keeping up with everything going on in my life. There is not enough hours in a day. Hopefully by this Thursday, I'll be back up to speed. For the return, here is what I got:

USAPL Raw Nationals- A Review by Matt Gary:

Maryland's Andrew Cohn (sponsored by APT) lifted in the inaugural USAPL Raw Nationals. The meet was held July 26-27 in St. Louis, MO. Matt Gary has submitted the following report on Andrew's performance and other aspects of the meet which include the first national meeting;

I just wanted to give everyone an update on this weekend's festivities. I just returned home from the inaugural USAPL Raw Nationals in St. Louis, MO.

There were 176 lifters competing from 32 states. Needless to say, there was an outstanding turnout. The meet was fantastic. There were huge crowds that filled the gymnasium, excellent lifting, consistent/fair judging (with the exception of one absolutely putrid awful judge), and an overall good time. They used the new Q-Bar on both platforms and I heard not one complaint. Everyone loved it.

I coached Andrew Cohn in the 90kg class. This was his first national level meet and he handled himself like a seasoned veteran. Andrew had no trouble making weight. He weighed in at 89.1kg (196.4 pounds). He lifted in the Junior and Open divisions. He placed third out of five in the juniors and tenth out of 23 total lifters in the open. This guy is on a roll. He had his best performance ever going 9/9 with four new PRs!

SQ - 424 (might have had 429, but 424 was the right call at the time)

BP - 303 (Andrew opened at 127.5kg instead of 122.5 because the expediters made an error and thought his second "two" looked like a seven. We didn't notice the mistake until he was in the hole. Too late, no worries, he nailed 281 instead of 270. It was the hardest of his three attempts as his body was ready for a 270 opener not 281. We went to 292 and it was the fastest bench press I've ever seen him do. I swear if you blinked you would have missed it - it was THAT fast. He took 303 on his third and worked, but got it.)

DL - 512 (he was definitely good for 523, maybe even 529)

TOTAL = 1,240 (up from 1,173)

He also set eight Maryland State records...he took all the junior raw records as well as the open ones at 198. To say Andrew is excited is putting it mildly. He will be competing at the USAPL Larry Garro meet on August 30 in Towson, MD and then taking some time off. If you have the time, send him a congratulations at gol10dr1@aol.com. He certainly deserves it.

We both attended the Raw Meeting Friday night. Approximately 40 people attended the meeting. Surveys were handed out at the equipment check and lifters were instructed to circle the gear they wanted to be approved as raw. They could also write in suggestions. Without going into a great amount of detail...the meeting was productive although no final decisions were made. It was more of a fact finding, information gathering, and brainstorming session. The main issues were: the definition of "raw," qualifying totals for future raw nationals, timing (calendar) for future raw nationals, and the establishment of a raw committee. The overwhelming consensus was to NOT allow the Inzer knee sleeves with velcro and to only allow neoprene sleeves like (Rehband or Tommy Kono, etc.). We also all agreed that we'd have to establish a rule of how thick the knee sleeves can be. Voting will take place at next year's NGB meeting at Men's Nationals. Until then, nothing changes. Everything remains as it is. I volunteered to be on the USAPL raw committee which will either have representatives from each states and/or regional members. Hence, when the times comes I will either be the Maryland rep or Mid-Atlantic rep. As I compete both geared and raw and as I usually attend Men's Nationals where voting takes place, I figured I could help in that way.

As for the Inzer knee sleeves. Andrew wore them and felt like they gave him nothing. However, he wore the correct size. Some guys purposely buy them two sizes too small and then crank the velcro attachments making it more like a true knee wrap. Of everyone I saw, I would say approximately 25% of the lifters wore the Inzer sleeves. Most other folks wore either nothing, Rehband, APT, or Tommy Kono. I didn't see one female lifter wearing the Inzers. Interesting.

Apparently, USAPL membership is up approximately 450 members from last year and the executives attribute most of that to the recent influx of raw lifters. Remember, this was the very first year. It's not perfect. Kinks need to be worked out. Decisions need to be and will be made. But rest assured, raw lifting is currently alive and well - at least in the USAPL.

Cheers,
Matt Gary

PS - For those that think raw powerlifting is for wimps and raw lifters don't lift a lot of weight (yes, I'm talking to all you gear heads), let me tell you about an unassuming guy named Noah Divine. This 90kg lifter was unreal. If you saw him on the street you wouldn't look twice. He's about 5'10", lean, and looks like a pretty ordinary dude. Well, when the chalk dust settled he placed third in the Open wearing a singlet only - no wrist wraps, no belt, no knee sleeves. He very calmly squatted an Olympic lifter deep 567 (near miss at 584), benched 374 (near miss at 386), and deadlifted 584. Absolute beast! The other guys were sweating bullets. This guy would walk up to the chalk box, chalk his hands, very quietly remove his baseball cap, annihilate his attempt, walk back over and put his cap back on, then return to the audience to sit with his family until his name was called again. I've seen quite a bit of lifting and he was, without a doubt, one of the most impressive lifters I have ever seen.
