May 7- Mikey Invitational (Rockville, MD)- submitted by Matt Gary;
For those of you that have been paying attention to the forum recently, Mike had originally planned on competing as a 181 at the 2008 USAPL Master's Nationals in Miami, FL last weekend. As life often throws us curves, his plans changed. Accordingly, he did not want his training cycle to go to waste. So today he came over to Rockville Fitness and tested himself in a mini-meet.
Jim Roberts came and helped spot, load, coach, and judge. Sioux-z, Tim Gill, and I all did the same. It was a blast. This is what powerlifting is all about....friends getting together and throwing some weight around.
Mike's performance was fantastic! He went 8/9 and hit three PRs including a 480 squat, 285 bench press, and a 1,260 total. The only discipline where Mike didn't hit a PR was in the deadlift where he went 3/3 and hit a sweet 495 anyway. For those keeping score at home, 495 is 99% of his 500-pound PR deadlift, so it wasn't too shabby as his final attempt of the day.
The only lift that Mike missed was a third attempt squat at 495. Mike wrapped himself on his first two attempts and decided he'd save his energy on his last one. Sioux-z wrapped him and really cranked the wraps down. As Mike hadn't been wrapped by someone else in a while - this was somewhat of a shock and caught him a little by surprise. I actually thought he was going to finish the 495. After a controlled descent, he hit the hole nicely and began to ascend where he got stuck and simply ran out of gas. 500 is definitely within reach and I'll be surprised if that doesn't fall very soon.
