The Maryland Powerlifting Report 3/6/08

Arnold Recap:

In reviewing the statements and reviews made on the various websites, it seems that the overall reaction of the powerlifting community is very favorable to the effort made by the USAPL at this years Arnold Sports Festival. Notable are the comments about the size of the crowds. It was noted that the attendance for the unequipped event that was held on Friday was large. According to accounts, Friday events have not attracted large audiences in the past. Also, judging and the spectacular performances by some of best powerlifters, not only from the U.S.A., but by those from around the world were lauded. The Quest Invitational and the bench finale saw a number of lifters, who traveled from afar to take part in this great annual event, go head-to-head in competiton. Awards for the champions included products and cash.

What follows is information gathered from the USAPL Powerlifting Forum, Go-Heavy and Powerlifting Watch.

From Larry Maile (President, USAPL):

I just landed here in Anchorage and wanted to take a moment to thank all of the people who made the USAPL/IPF events at the Arnold Sports Festival a great success. First, the lifters did a great job and they represented USAPL powerlifting well.

The members of the USAPL sports festival committee did a great job. Rick Fowler's media work presented our lifters and our organization with great professionalism. Much of the work behind the scenes goest to Priscilla and Brad who worked exhaustively with sponsors and with athlete selection, notifications, generation of funding, etc. Lance worked with merchandising and marketing and Rob Keller served as the Techical Secretary for the meet, organizing all of the technical aspects of the meet. Johnny Graham worked on logistics prior to and served as platform manager during the Expo Stage events as we didn't have access to the bar load program for the spotters and loaders.

We had five outstanding announcers over the course of the weekend: Lance Slaughter, Rick Fowler, Pat Rankin, Pat Anderson, and Niko Hulslander. The inspired the crowd, provided color, and kept the meets moving. I had numberous compliments on them throughout the weekend.

Joe and Cathy Marksteiner provided their usual professional scoring, and on Saturday, worked separately to run two meets simultaneously. Great job.

IPF President Detlev Albrings, General Secretary Emmanual Schieber, and Vice President Susumu Yoshida were present. One thing you have to say about this administration: They pitch in and work. At one point we had two regional and one IPF president loading weights.

Our very generous sponsors helped make this event possible. When we tally up the account sheets, it hopefully will come out a wash and it largely due to the financial support of GNC Properformance, Titan Support Systems, Elieko Sport, and Quest Nutrition.

Working with Mr. Lorimer's staff was a great experience. They were helpful, supportive and wanted us to succeed. We were visited by Mr. Lorimer several times, several members of his staff, and on Saturday, Governor Swarzenegger also visited the Quest Invitational and spoke for a few minutes.

Thanks to Billy Kazmeier who spoke briefly onstage during the Titan Pro Bench Bash and was very supportive of USAPL/IPF powerlifting.

Finally, if there is one person without whom this event would not have been possible it has to be Greg Page. Greg was responsible for transporting most of the equipment, arranging the spotters and loaders, platform managing, providing the moving carts, receiving and shipping the USAPL merchandise and worked every day starting Thursday afternoon, dawn til well after dark and is probably still working. Greg represents the very best of our federation.

Thank you to all for all of your hard work and support. Without the 50 or 60 volunteers who pitched in, this meet would not have been a success.

From Deltev Albrings (President, IPF):

Dear Larry, dear athletes, dear members of the festival committee, dear sponsors, dear powerlifters and guests at our events at the Arnold's,

On behalf of the IPF I would like to congratulate you all for this exciting events and impressive 3 days in Columbus. Without the support of all, who are mentioned in Larry's post, we will not have so well organised events.Personally I want to say a big thank to you for the hospitality and friendship also for the experience to test pancakes at Bob Evans. It was also very impressive for me to watch other kind of sports and the atmosphere at this Festival and at the Expo.

It was a great show and it described the abilities of the USAPL to manage events, which inspire the audience. I was one day earlier at the Columbus Great Convention Center and I learned the logistics to organise such championships on different stages. The organisation at the Expo stage must be very on time and there is less possibilty to overrun the time of the slot, then all the other sports at the Expo stage want to present themselves.

I can fully confirm the post of Larry and I hope to see you all next year to our second edition in Columbus.

From Mike Sweeney (WPC President):

I was there on Saturday for the three contest. The judging was fair and consistant, the lifters had a blast and the fans were on their feet more than once. I wasn't us, but it doesn't have to be, would I come back to watch this......absolutely! Good Job!....you all represent your organization very well!!!!!!

From Rick Fowler (USAPL State Chairman, MS):

Ok gang,
Here's a quick recap from the weekend. I've got a bit of a mixed report from the meet.

First and foremost, I'd like to give an update on Jeff "The King" Lewis. I just spoke with him and his is in great spirits. The plan is to do an ultrasound, see exactly what the damage is and go from there. He can actually stand on his left knee which is a good sign. The right side we are unsure about. They are not convinced just yet that the both patellas are torn and will no more once the swelling goes down. He did say that the rush of walking out to the crowd that was there, was like nothing he had ever felt. He said he could feel the energy from each and every one of you, and wanted to thank everyone in attendance.

Thanks to the Bill McDonough and the rest of the SLPD crew he trains with, he is currently back in town and at a local hospital. Longtime training partner Willie Lemeire drove him back that night and the rest of the pack followed. Special thanks to his training partners who stood buy, brought him back and provided the muscle to move him at the hospital.

That being said, aside from that was a HUGE success. Anyone present for the Mens Nationals we held last summer can remember how intense that was....The Quest Invitational was that, plus more people and on a larger stage. USA Powerlifting was able to duplicate that intensity plus some and in front of a wider audience. Great job to everyone who played a part.

Anything I wrote would be incomplete if I failed to mention my partners in announcing, Lance Slaughter, Dr. Patrick Anderson and Pat Rankin. Lance teamed up with me on Friday for the Raw Challenge, Pat Anderson was on hand for the Quest Invitational and Pat Rankin. These guys made my job easy and I can't thank them enough. A great job by three guys.

For those who were unable to attend, the event had huge video screens, speakers 20 feet in the air and a booming sound system. We ran music the entire time, even when the lifter was lifting. There was nothing quiet about this event, the only thing it lacked was a 2 drink minimum. It was rock concert quality with rigging up above and stage lighting that lit the center up nice and bright.

You can't imagine what a rush it was for me to announce this. Not just that, but looking out in the audience, perched atop a 6 foot riser, and seeing the vocal crows supporting our guys was enough to give me chills.

I'd personally like to give a special thanks to Brad Manion, a training partner of mine. Brad and I flew up on Thursday and our plan was to play a part in setting up that morning. With the weather and traffic, the first truck of equipment didn't arrive until 8pm and the race to setup began. Our second load from Pennsylvania arrived with Niko Hulslander at around 10pm. It's a great feeling to know you've played an important part, and Brad was a huge helping hand to our skeleton crew. Along with that, on Friday, Brad took a horseshoe and with his hands, bent it into the shape of a heart. I've seen him do these feats a million times and the crowd seemed to be pretty impressed with his steel bending.

Thanks also to Putt Houston who came to the meet St. Louis for the sole purpose of lending a hand wherever he was needed. He said he'd do whatever, wrap knees, spot, pickup trash, etc. Putt helped Elliot Feldman to coordinate backstage the lifters who were on deck and assisted in getting them ready in time. Simply put, Putt is powerlifting through and through. He was a great help and at a moments notice when I needed to kill a few minutes he and I improvised to give a nice interview.

I also need to thank Pat Rankin and Wayne Eilermann who drove from the Gateway City for making the trip. Pat teamed up with me to announce the GNC Deadlift on Saturday and the Reverend delivered the goods. He and Wayne go way back to Jr. High School and being around these guys is a treat. They are the Odd Couple and the banter went on the entire weekend. My sides hurt today from laughing at these two. They roomed with me and although Pat says Wayne and I snore, I still say it was actually Pat and Wayne.

The staff, many who go unnoticed and played behind the scenes rolls, involved in pulling this off should take a deep breath and be satisfied for a job very well done. It was a pleasure to work with all of you.

I could spend days writing and telling you more, but I'll rely on everyone who was there to share some of their great stories.
