Partial results of competition held 2-23-08 Severe weather problems kept over 30 Pennsbury High School lifters from making the trip and arrangements are being made to "finish" the meet next weekend. The school district did not allow them to travel on school buses due to the weather.

Powerlifting Watch to include results from major unsanctioned meets in lifter's rankings.

From Jon:
I want to thank everyone who provided feedback on whether to add unsanctioned meets to the Powerlifting Watch Lifter Rankings (subs req.) and, if so, in what manner. After much consideration of that feedback, the Lifter Rankings will now include major unsanctioned meets which have published rules which are consistent with generally accepted rules of powerlifting.

The number of events which will meet this criteria is extremely limited and will be the exception. Right now, only the Raw Unity Meet qualifies. Bench America would also have qualified. Fears of every backyard touch and go meet creeping into the rankings are unfounded. Just like all sanctioned meet aren't included in the Rankings (eg. SLP), all unsanctioned meets won't be. By keeping the criteria tight, we're not in any danger of opening the floodgates for questionable unsanctioned lifts to overwhelm sanctioned lifts.

The reason I've chosen this route is due to the fractured state of powerlifting. With fewer federations, moving outside of federation lines to pit the best against one another likely would prove unneccesary. However, with powerlifting as it is today in America, bringing the best together on the same platform becomes much harder. Efforts that do so need to be recognized. The IPA is doing this for multi ply lifters in the form of their Pro-Am events. Unfortunately, no similar success at the federation level has been realized in single ply and unequipped lifting. Allowing unsanctioned unity type meets fills those gaps.

I think it's safe to say that most powerlifting competitors and fans would like to know who are the best raw, single and multi ply lifters and would like to see the same competing together to determine that title. Ultimately, even in a small way, I don't want to discourage events whose aim is just that; events like the Raw Unity Meet and Bench America.

While some may view this move as a ding to the integrity of the Lifter Rankings, I think supporting unity in powerlifting is hugely important, and if the Rankings can do that, their integrity should ultimately be bolstered.

APF News:

Mike McDonald (VP, APF) shares some guidelines for recruiting, development and responsibilities for referees in the APF/AAPF:

Recently I posted my typical content for a rules meeting for lifters at an APF meet. Feedback was that the info. was additive. I committed to do similar for a judges’ meeting. Info. to follow will to some degree be from the perspective of judging at an APF meet but not exclusively so. It’s isn’t in the format of communication at a judges’ meeting but instead just my perspectives and general opinions on judging. Input from others (lifters, judges, coaches, and spectators) as upgrades or to correct my perspective is welcome.
