American Open: Injury Besets Matt
Matt Gary was injured as he was preparing to compete in the USAPL American Open which was held in Scranton, PA this past weekend. He was on his fourth and next to last warm-up preparing for his opening attempt in the squat when he experienced a serious injury to his quadriceps muscle in his right leg. As Matt described it; "On my second to last warm-up in the squat, I sat down with 440 and on the ascent I tore my right quadriceps. I felt a violent "pop" and shooting pain from my right hip (glute) all the way down my outer thigh and IT Band. Fortunately, my spotters were able to catch enough of the weight and help me back into the racks preventing further and possibly more serious injury. I immediately knew this wasn't something I could merely shake off and withdrew from the competition." He was not able to continue on in the competition. However, after some ibuprofen and ice, Matt was with the lifters in the staging area behind the platform helping them prepare for their lifts.
In a note received from Matt, he will be seeing his doctor upon his return today (12/3) and promises to make a return to the platform even stronger in the near future.
