Maryland Powerlifting Report-Mid-Week
Update: USAPL Maryland State Powerlifting & Open Bench Press Chamionships
The second try is the charm; for those wondering why the MD States have not been included on the USAPL Calendar..., for some reason, the National Office did not receive the first application I submitted (early July). They got the second one and I now have the sanction!
I now have the first three entry forms and those lifters will receive Convict Pro Wrist Wraps from APT when they show up for weigh-ins on December 8th!
Cotillo Loses Appeal: MD Court Says athletes cannot sue over ‘foreseeable’ injuries
Judge Clayton Greene wrote in the Maryland Court of Appeals decision; "By voluntarily participating in a powerlifting competition, Mr. Cotillo assumed the risks that are the usual and foreseeable consequences of participation in weightlifting.” (Examiner 2007)
On November 8, 2003 (Examiner 2006), Christopher Cotillo was lifting in an APA meet at Patuxant High School in Calvert County when on his third attempt of 530 lbs, the bar crashed onto his face shattering his jaw. Based on the instructions that were given to the spotter-loaders, Cotillo filed suit in Calvert County Court which was eventually thrown out. He then
appealed to the Maryland Court of Appeals, which is Maryland's second highest court and won a temporary victory on December 6, 2006. He lost his suit when the court ruled against him this past Tuesday. (The courts ruling.)
As an interesting discussion piece; do you think event organizers should be held responsible when accidents occur? Is it your opinion that spotter-loaders should be skilled in providing support for the lifters beyond the instruction given to them at the meet? For more discussion on this matter, go to the message board.
