Maryland Powerlifting Report 10/2/07
After a brief delay in starting, Matt and Sioux-z Gary began their presentation. With the aid of three separate platforms; one platform was equipped for deadlifting, the second had a combo rack for squats and bench press and the third had a power rack equipped with an assortment of bands, straps, chains and a adjustable bench, they took their audience of about 40 participants through a top to bottom review of execution of the three powerlifts and how to build a sound training program. The day ended with a technique assessment where each in the audience were encouraged to have their lifting techniques critiqued by Linda Jo Belsito, Niko Hulslander, Kirk Karwoski and Julie Scanlon .
Beginning with the Competitive Lifts (squat, bench and deadlift), Sioux-z demonstrated the three lifts while Matt advised those in attendance of common mistakes lifters make while performing the lifts. Next, during this first session, the discussion focused on Assistance Exercises & Movements. A list was provided of 35 different types of movements to help build the squat and deadlift. Emphasis was placed on six movements that Matt went into great detail to describe. A list of 20 movements was provided for building the bench press. Pull-ups received a special note on both lists as it has been identified as a great movement to aid in improving one's goals to set new PR's. During the discussion concerning assistance work, it was emphasized that if the goal is to powerlift, one should select types of training aids that will support that goal and not those which will offer limited if no help in getting stronger in the three lifts. Matt briefly discussed isometrics and plyomentrics as tools to use in training by more advanced lifters and also spoke how various movements could be utilized to develop areas identified as weak or as an aid in rehabilitative efforts in instances of injuries.
After an hour lunch break, the second session focused on the technical aspect of powerlifting. Matt and Sioux-z spoke about Training Methodology which included; the overload principle, periodization, types of strength, Prilepin's table and training methods/systems. Utilizing charts, they went into great detail discussing pro's and con's of the various discussion points. After, the discussion focused on Raw-vs-Gear. The point was made to get strong without gear before utilizing gear. They also displayed the various pieces of gear typically used by lifters in IPF competitions which included; bench shirts, squat suits, shoes, socks and wraps. They spoke about how to manage meets from timing warm-up attempts to being ready to make attempts on the platform. Towards the end of the second session, they spoke about making weight, nutrition and maintaining a positive mental approach to the sport of powerlifting as opposed to a negative approach which sets one up for certain failure.
Over and hour was dedicated to allowing participants perform lifts under the observation of past champions. Kirk Karwoski made observations on the squat platform. Niko Huslander assisted at the power rack where the benching was performed. And Linda Jo Belsito made observations at the deadlift platform. Participants were able to freely move between each of the three platforms receiving helpful suggestions from not only Kirk, Niko and Linda, but Matt, Sioux-z and Julie as well.
For those who missed this great opportunity, Matt and Sioux-z are considering doing more seminars in the future.
