Athletes Commission:
In a response during a discussion thread at Powerlifting Watch concerning the recently published TC News Letter No 5 2007, Inger Blikra (Speaker for the athletes’ commission) released the following "open letter" addressed to the IPF-Executive Committee:
To the IPF-EC
August 14, 2007
A letter from the Athletes commission to the IPF-EC
The lifters commission (from now on called the athletes’ commission according to the proposal for the congress about the commission) have been working by e-mail since early this summer. There have been a lot of good discussions, and a lot of suggestions/proposals. Here is a summary of the issues that right now are most important to us:
Most important of all for the athletes is fair play. We want competition on equal terms all over the IPF-world. The fight against doping in the sport is very important to us. We have been observing the development in the case with the suspensions of the Ukrainian and Russian federations, and were very surprised when the suspension was terminated before the set date. A lot of athletes all over the world were quite angry about the termination. The test result from these federations indicates that they are carrying out domestic in competition testing. But to our knowledge they still have a lot of work to do before they have established an out of competition testing programme complying with the standards of the Wada Code and the IPF Anti-Doping Rules, which they have to do according to the July press release.
One proposal from the commission is related to the desire of fair play. Currently if a country has a positive lifter at the worlds, they lose that position for the next two years at worlds (one positive male lifter would only allow the country to send a 9 man team to the following worlds versus 10). Currently 6 team members score team points. Today, if one of those 6 is positive, then their score is replaced by a lesser scoring teammate. Our proposal is that the team scoring is reduced by the number of positive lifters at that championship. If one is positive, then team scoring would be based on 5 team members, if two are positive, then scoring would be based on 4 team members, and so on.
The reputation of our sport is also important to us. Over the years powerlifting has been associated with doping, but during the last decade or so the IPF has managed to show the world that we are seriously fighting doping in our sport. It is important to keep the integrity of our sport with our doping guidelines highlighted. If other sports or activities are added to our championships (or other powerlifting events and competitions), it is important that only sports that holds the same standards of antidoping programme (complying with the standards of the Wada Code) is invited or added in.
Rules and specifications for the personal equipment (suits and shirts) should not be changed too often, that brings only costs (and confusion) for the lifters. The work that is done on material examination is difficult to understand, and the conclusions seem to be made a bit by the "name a number"-method. If all materials in use in approved equipment today will be legal with these specifications, it can be a useful tool to stop the flow of new materials. The main thing for the lifters is that we do not want more new shirts or new materials. And we do not want equipment that is approved today to be forbidden tomorrow. The lifters need time to settle down with the equipment, the constant "hunt" for the perfect suit or shirt take focus from the training. We fear that going back to materials with more elasticity will result only in downsized equipment that easily tear, and the risk of injuries increases.
The interval between the squat and the bencpress should be increased to 20 minutes when a lifting session consists of only one group. The IPF technical rulebook says: "If a lifting session consist of a single group, an interval of 15 minutes shall be allowed between the lifts. This is to ensure adequate time for warm up and platform organization". 15 minutes is not enough time to remove the squatsuit, warm up properly, put the shirt on and adjust the shirt. Many lifters have to skip the warm up to get ready in time, the result of this is a large risk of injuries (especially shoulders).
At all world and regional championships the organizer should provide a place and schedule for training during the championships (and the last days before the start of the championships). The combined men and women’s championships last for almost a week, and many of the athletes need training during that period. If needed, transport from hotel/venue to training should be provided by the organizer (depends on the distance).
These are all proposals from the athletes’ commission. We hope the EC will consider our proposals and bring them in for the congress.
Best regards
Inger Blikra
Speaker for the athletes’ commission
