News Letter
Summer Bench Press Classic- July 21, 2007
On behalf of John Mogavero and Skip Gormely (meet directors), I would like to thank the following:
The members and staff of the North Brentwood Community Center for allowing us to "take over" their gym to hold this competition. Especially; Eunice McCullough, Kevin Beale, Jerome Shipp and Stephen Parks who were from the commission.
The following referees and officials; Caryn Daniel, Marsha Serre, Sioux-z Gary (who also lifted!), Brian Washington and Eugene Julien.
And those who lifted the most; Jim Bardsley, James Bardsley and Joe Russo..., you guys are GREAT!
We especially would like to thank all the lifters who came and put it on the line on the platform. And then some, including Matt Gary, Lloyd Harrod and Chris Felix pitched in and helped load the truck and clean up the site!
I wasn't able to see much of the meet. But, it was exciting to meet Disa Hatfield and Jen Perry and along with our own Sioux-z Hartwig-Gary, see them lift in what will likely be their final tune-up before heading to Austria and IPF World Championships in October. For some like me, it isn't often when you have the opportunity to see the number of national/world level lifters on one platform as we did on Saturday, unless you travel to see them lift in the various national championships. Additionally, it was an excellent opportunity for those both running and officiating this meet to showcase our talents to those who traveled to our state for this meet/exhibition. Despite issues with communication leading up to this event, I think each who played a role in making this meet a success rose to the occasion. For this meet, the location and venue, though hard to find for some, was excellent.
It is hoped that the results will be posted soon.
John, Skip and I will now turn our attention to the Maryland States which will be held in Annapolis on December 8. We will be meeting soon to discuss that meet and possible future events.
Of Note:
In last week's Mid-Week edition (7/19/07) of the News Letter, Brad Madvig had started a survey (it is now closed) in what appeared to be an effort to overturn the decision made by the NGB in removing knee wraps and instead allowing knees sleeves as a part of raw/unequipped lifting in competitions.
In response to concerns, Larry Maile, President-USAPL made the following statement:
While my position is that wraps are more for safety than performance, they do add to a squat. I have to say that I won't lift raw as I can't afford (time AND money) the knee replacement that I have been avoiding for the last few years.
That being said, the proposal was straightforward, and passed by a majority. I don't remember the specific vote right now. It won't be reversed by the E.C., the Technical Committee, or anyone else. It may be a topic for reconsideration at the next NGB meeting, but it was a legitimate statement endorsed by our governing body and, as they say, "that's the way it is." Our delegates have spoken.
In a democracy, you win some, you lose some, but you have to support the collective will of the organization. In our organization, the will is expressed via the vote of the National Governing Body. They voted to exclude knee wraps. Now we will begin the grand experiment.
Some sentiment has been expressed that we are targeting other organizations' members. In some ways yes, but you will not see USAPL emailing, recruiting, or otherwise incentivizing lifters to come to USAPL. Rather, you will see the pride of ownership. We believe that USAPL offers the best overall, and most professional package: consistent judging, invariate drug testing, well run meets, and a great community that has continued for almost three decades. We believe that people who try us will like us. To allow new lifters to come in and try a USAPL meet in an atmosphere in which they can both be competive and not have the initial investment in equipment can only be good for both us and for them. I suspect that many will move on to geared competition, at least some of the time. By the same token, I expect that some lifters who have competed primarily equipped will try raw. Most likely not as a consistent modality (although some may) but as a change of pace. It is another new challenge and who doesn't want to try something new?
So, I believe that the raw division will be success, as will be the raw nationals. Does it detract from the equipped divisions? I don't think so. And USAPL has NO, I repeat, NO plan to eliminate equipment.
