ED Coan to retire- according to an account at Iron Mind, Ed Coan will retire after lifting in the upcoming USPF Nationals which will be held in Los Vegas, NV on August 11. In a post at the USPF message board, Steve Denison encourages all to "come out to witness and support a true legend of Powerlifting at his final contest."
In a post at Powerlifting Watch, Sean Katterle questions why Coan chose to lift in the USPF Nationals instead a meet (clash of the Titans) which he believes will attract a larger crowd and give him send off worthy of his stature. Katterle also suggests that the single ply gear worn in USPF meets is in fact no different than the multi-ply gear with the addition of X-line fabrics.
With that in mind the following should be considered:
1) Coan has lifted his entire career as a member of one federation. It is kind of unique and rare in this era that you find any one lifter who can make that claim. Along with his exploits on the platform, it is that kind of dedication to principles and sport which I think sets Coan apart from others. Coan serves on the Executive Committee of the USPF where he has taken a stand to keep the USPF from venturing into the world of extreme contests. Similar to those promoted by the WPO/WPC. And there are a number of individuals who remain as members of the USPF who stayed with their federation when they lost the IPF affiliation to the USAPL. While it had to be disapointing, those who stayed continued the work to grow their federation. That included Coan. He could have gone anywhere. The lure of flashy stage props and cash awards would be too great for most to resist.
2) Gear allowed into meets by the USPF is the same as that allowed by the USAPL (IPF). While it can be agreed that the single ply gear in use today is far more advanced than that worn by Coan and his contemporaries in past years, it is due to demand that the manufacturers have dedicated their resources to improving single ply gear in use today. It makes sense..., if you can build something that can replace two of something, then why not? It is called making it efficient. And perhaps the gear today could extend Coan's career. Perhaps it could also aid him in making larger lifts. I'd say that it comes a time in each competitor's career, and challenges is what compelled Coan to greater heights, that there really isn't anymore to do. After years of training and the resulting demands placed on ones body, the sacrifices become too great and it is time for a new lifter to take on the challenges. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Coan still uses equipment he used when he lifted at so many IPF Championships.
Who will be the next Coan? With the breed seen in powerlifting today, I think it will be a while before we see anyone achieve the greatness of Coan. It is this writers hope that we haven't seen the last of Coan. After all, he is only 44. Leaves me kind of awe struck when you think he has been a competitor on the national and world stage for what seems like many, many years.
Kieran Kidder reemerges: In a statement at the WPC website, the APF President and WPC owner gives an overview of of the APF/WPC status. He notes the following:
1) Changes in schedule of two meets along with the location.
2) Notes location of the WPO finals. To be held at Fit Expo in Mid February, 2008
3) Indicates that at the meet in Lake George, $15,000 in prize money will be available. He also sugests that $25,000 (maybe more) in prize money will likely be awarded at Fit Expo.
4) WPO Stars of the Bench is scheduled for this summerin the Ukraine and $50,000 in prise money is expected to be awarded at that contest.
Kidder also adds the following note in closing:
Thank you Bill Crawford, Scot Mendelson, and Spartak Vaskovsky for not jumping ship, and actually doing something to help the cause instead of complain. Bottom line there are lifters/promoters out there that no matter what happens will always be APF/WPC/WPO for life!! That would quit the sport, or die rather than lift in 2nd rate federations with no history/credibility. It's a of matter pride.
The UPA continues to add administrators to it growing list. The United Powerlifting Association now has 5 state chairmen. Maryland is not represented. to date, 3 meets have been scheduled.
