News Letter 4/30/07

There is not much to report this week. For a change, another federation hasn't been founded and the tremors that followed the anouncement that the WPO/WPC was out at the Arnold and the USAPL was in seem to have subsided to mild aftershocks.

Speaking of earthquakes, the USPF will be joining the WPO/WPC at Fit Expo in Los Angelas, CA next year. While neither are working in conjunction with the other, the show is promising to be on the same level, if not rise above that of those that have been presented at the Arnold in years past when only the WPO/WPC was featured. I'm certain that the event will have greater credibiltiy with the USPF involved as they've managed to maintain much of the foundation that went into founding the IPF in the first place. That inlcudes adherance to rules and IPF style judging of lifts. Now, if we could only get the drug testing questions resolved, we might find that the USPF is indeed the federation of and for the lifters.

Maryland's Mike Sichelman of Laurel (Colosseum Gym, Columbia,MD) will be traveling and competing in the USAPL Master's Nationals this week. He lifts on Friday, May 4 in Milwaukee, WI. He is lifting in the Master's 40-44 (M1) 181 weight class. I watched Mike train last Monday and this past Sunday. He looks like he is well on his way to setting new PR's. Especially in the bench. When I asked him about his last training date with the deadlift, he explained it did not go so well. But, unfortunately (perhaps fortunately) for him, your's truly will be there to provide what help I can give and motivation speeches along the way. Oh the pain!!! After watching him bench last week and yesterday (Sunday), he is most definitely primed to take a big leep ahead of previous bests in the past. He is burying his squats and should equal or exceed his performance seen at the Maryland States this past December. Lets keep exceed as the foremost priority when speaking of goals! Hopefully, I'll get a chance to talk more with Mike after the meet and share more of his experience with you then.

This coming weekend another attempt at a joint sanction meet is to occur. In Johnson City, NY, Wayne Claypatch is set to host a powerlifting and bench meet on May 5 that is sanctioned through the ADAU and 100% RAW. It is hoped that if anyone attends this meet will share their experience with the rest of us. Having been to ADAU meets and been involved with 100% RAW, it will be intresting to see how compatible the lifters and enforcemnt of rules might be. My expectations are always at a higher level when I go to ADAU meets in regard to rules. My expectations are much different, not to mean any less, when I go to 100% RAW meets. They're just two very different federations where lifters have come to adjust for the type of meet conditions they encounter when they compete in meets sanctioned by either. For some, they lift under both banners already and for those, this joint meet will invlove very little adjustment in how they train and mentally approach this meet. Good luck to both the organizers and the lifters.

It looks like there will be a proposal made to the NGB of the USAPL for consderation when it meets in July to consider adding a raw national meet. I would encourage the members of the USAPL NGB to give serious consideration to adding a raw division and commence keeping records for raw lifts. It is time for the U.S. affiliate to take the lead in this ongoing debate and for the lifters to strongly encourage their state representatives to vote in the affirmative for this measure. It is time for the lifters to make their voices heard and take back the sport which is rightfully theirs.

Results from the Quest American Invitational were announced by Sherman Ledford (President, Quest Nutrition):
Quest American Invitational 2007
We had the Quest American Invitational 2007 this past weekend and there was some great lifting. Jeremy Scruggs came in and hit a tune-up before Men’s, and had a nice 490 deadlift at 123. Doc Holloway had moved from 123 to 132 and put on an awesome show. Doc hit a huge PR squat of 567 and benched 341 and a 589 deadlift with a close miss at 608 which would have been a new American record DL. This gave Doc a new American record total of 1499. Doc’s lifts were all clean and easy. Only his last DL attempt was missed on balance at the top. Watch for big things from Doc this year!
Tony Conyers came from Florida this year again. He hit a nice 655 squat for a new Master’s record. He was a little off on his bench and pull but had a good meet all together. Tony had hit a raw meet a few weeks earlier that might have affected his performance.
At 181, Wade Hooper lifted at a light 170 pounds. Wade had some balance issues in the squat which took away the American record attempt. But he benched an American record 512. Wade always seems to break records at each competition. We are expecting big things out of Wade at 165 this year at nationals. His training numbers have been crazy and I’m sure he will bounce back and have great performance.
At 198, we had a battle between John Pena from Arizona and Dan Williams from Wisconsin. Dan is a young guy with a lot potential. John squatted 694 and Dan squatted 705. Dan came up with an easy 727 but was caught on depth. John ended up with some shirt issues and changed his shirt and put up 501 on his third. Dan benched a PR 446. John was leading coming into the deadlift and Dan opened with 684 … nice. John pulled 600 for a 1796 total at 198. Dan had a couple of attempts of over 720 that didn’t quite go and ended up totaling 1835.
Then came the Mike Mastrean show! Mike had moved up to 242. His opening squat was 832 which was a crazy number. It was easy but was caught on depth. He then jumped to 861 for a new American record. His set up was a little shaky, but got it in. On to 887 and it was the best lift of the day. It was very explosive and deep. Everybody in the audience was in awe. On the bench, he opened with a clean 490 then went to 512, on to 534. all strong benches for Mike. Then it was time to deadlift. Second attempt was 733 for a new American record total. A very strong lift for an American record total of 2154. On to 755, for a total of 2176 – a new American record total. This squat record and total record were some of the oldest records on the books – over 15 years old. Mike handled these weights easily and looks primed for the Nationals.
Tony Cardella came in with some impressive PRs. He was a little bit under the weather but lifted great. Tony’s 843 last squat attempt was easy. He had a little issue with 600 on the Bench and ended up with 578. On the deadlift. He opened with 705 and it was easy. Second attempt 771 was another easy one. Then on to a PR 815 for a total of 2237.
All together, it was a great weekend and everybody had a lot of fun. Hope to see everybody next year at the Arnold for an even better show!
Prize money will be distributed after drug results are in. Total Prize Money and Sponsorships of over $6,000 will be given to these world class powerlifters.
