News Letter 4/16/07
There was a lot going on in the powerlifting community while I was away. The WPO is out and the USAPL is now in as the powerlifting partner at the Arnold Sports Festival. It is hoped that the USAPL will be successful as it now contemplates its role and how to proceed in planning for this major event. It is hoped that a lot of thought is given by planners and that mistakes of the past are considered when planning for this event.
And leading up to this change at the Arnold, Louie Simmons of West Side Barbell announced that his lifters would no longer compete in WPO/WPC sanctioned meets. And after some speculation that he would support the IPA, decided to establish a new pro powerlifting federation. While the change that was made at the Arnold probably had no bearing on Mr. Simmon's decision, there has been much discussion concerning the manner in which Kieran Kidder has managed the APF/WPO/WPC and the growing discontent amongst the membership.
The USPF has been accepted as the U.S. affiliate for the World Powerlifting Federation (WPF). However, there are differences in both rules and amongst long time USPF members in how to proceed. At this time, there seems to be little resistance amongst the EC to changing the rules, except in cases where the mono lift or grooved briefs may be allowed and the upcoming Nationals that are to be held in Los Vegas this summer will be competed according to WPF rules.
APA News:

A note from the APA President, Scott Taylor:
With so many recent changes and improvements and advancements to the various materials used in gear and the urging of many of our members, the APA will now allow the use of canvas gear in the form of an unlimited gear division. In addition we offer RAW divisions to those who wish to compete without the use of gear. Standard divisions will remain the same. For more information feel free to contact me at my email address as I do not often go on the forums. My email address is Scott Taylor
In addition to the above announcement, Scott Taylor confirmed that briefs with legs will be allowed and that a revised rule book will be available soon.
