News Letter 11/6/06

This weeks edition of the News Letter is a trimmed down version. Sorry!

The 2006 IPF Congress

There has been much interest in what the rules may look like after the IPF Congress met. Issues concerning bench shirts, performance of the bench press, IOC recognition and the Brian Siders suspension was some of the issues widely discussed and debated leading up to this very important meeting of the IPF member nations. The following is an account in which Robert Keller gives some indication as to what to expect in the upcoming year.

The 2006, IPF Congress met on Sunday, November 5 and Robert Keller reports the following:

1. The final step and decision regarding our candidature for provisional IOC recognition will be made at the IOC Meeting in Dubai at the end of this month... We are very close, and we remain cautiously optimistic... If approved, the IPF would be recognized by ARISF [Association for Recognized International Sports Federations], which is an IOC affiliated organization.

2. All of the technical rules proposed were passed, except for rule that empowers the IPF Executive Committee to create the technical rules... There was considerable discussion and debate on this matter, with democracy ruling the day.

3. Brad Gillingham was inducted into the IPF Hall of Fame! I must say a well deserving award to one of the greatest of all time.

He adds some clarity:

1. All of the new rules shall go into effect on January 01, 2007. The new IPF technical rules can be found here: 2006 Technical Rule Changes

Another matter of significance regarding the rules is the 44kg class for the Women and the 52kg class for the Men has been eliminated, except for the Sub-Junior/Junior level lifters where it shall stay in...

2. The Bench Press shirts will stay in until at least 2009. Discussion are still taking place on returning to the older versions of the shirts. However, I believe this is going to fail as well.

His comment concerning arching:

The spirit of the rule change was to reduce the super arches, and lengthen the stroke of the bench from the chest to lockout... However, as it appears now, if one can keep the whole of the buttocks on the bench press and maintain an arch, you should be good to go...

Like anything, there will be an adjustment phase for this...
