News Letter 10/16/06

A video of 7 time National and 6 time World Champion, "Captain" Kirk squatting 440 Kg (970 lbs) has been found at You Tube . It was from the 1995 World Championships where he won that year in the 125 kg (275 lb) Weight Class. He finished 1st having made the 440kg (970 lb) squat, a 237.5 (523.6 lb) bench press and a 322.5 (711 lb) deadlift for a 1000 kg (2204.6 lb) total. The World Championship was competed in Pori, Finland. November 15 thru 19, 1995.

In this picture, Kirk squatted 826 lbs raw (only a belt) @ 241.5 bwt at an AAU meet held December 4, 2004 in Laughlin, NV. Critical Bench published a great article in which they interviewed Kirk and he talks at length not only about this meet but a wide range of topics of interest to all powerlifters.

100% RAW News:
The 2006, 100% RAW Maryland Open Bench Press Meet that was scheduled for November 4 in Severna Park, MD has been canceled.

The debate concerning whether to allow a non-tested division to be added to 100% RAW heated up over the weekend with an attempt by Shawn Lyte (VP, 100% RAW) to clarify the role he is playing in Sam Byrd's effort to establish a non-tested version of RAW. For more on this discussion go to the RAW Powerlifting message board and also Powerlifting Watch. Shawn received a mixed response which was not very supportive of allowing a non-tested divison be part of RAW, which culminated in a statement made by Paul Bossi (President, 100% RAW).
