(SSPT) serves Washington, D.C. and suburban Maryland athletes by providing the best strength and conditioning environment in the area. The facility is founded on the belief that athletes and dedicated trainees want a training environment that cultivates enhanced performance and fosters success. Training results are more easily obtained in an environment with the best training tools, free of distractions that might spoil a competitive and winning atmosphere.

At SSPT we provide the best training environment for serious trainees. We believe that traditional approaches to physical achievement are often based on current industry trends and past methods that have been proven ineffective. Accordingly, we employ methods based on time-tested ideas, proven scientific principles and new research, as well as our own experiences. Our facility emphasizes only the necessary training implements without nonessential items that waste an athlete’s time and interfere with progress.

An individual will work harder and risk more in the company of knowledgeable and trustworthy peers. In addition to providing the best training tools, we’re also home to the best and most knowledgeable strength coaches in the area. SSPT creates a culture and a physical surrounding within which athletes can achieve desired results most efficiently. Overall performance increases and injuries will decrease due to the quality of the training environment. Personal gains, such as improved performance and well-being, combined with measurable benefits, will create tremendous advantages for both the trainee and coach.

SSPT is owned and operated by Matthew Gary and Suzanne Hartwig-Gary. He asked me to post this.

The Full Power Nationals this year will be split. There will be a West Nationals (Regional?) and an Eastern National (Regional?). The West National will be in Arizona - no other info at this time.
Paul is considering holding the Eastern Nationals in Maryland in conjunction with the Single Lift Nationals. He has a been offered a large venue that would provide separate areas for the 2 events.

Here is a question for those of you who would be competing in the Nationals: The proposed date for Eastern Nationals is June 20. Father's day is June 21. Would that be a problem for any of you? The 4th of July is just 2 weeks later so if the meet is moved back a week, it will fall very close to the 4th.

To read more and see comments; click HERE

Unofficial-USAPL Best of 2008
by Brad Madvig

I present to you.. Over the last 30 years, I’ve been a lifter, ref and coach and I’ve put together this set of tools to help you run your Powerlifting contests. If you know how to use Microsoft Excel, all you need is a laptop, a printer, and a projector to run meets better, faster, and more accurately. The scoring program started as a simple Excel spreadsheet with a barload graphic has grown to a full blown suite of programs and tools to help you run PL contests from local level to world championships – and it’s all free.

Good luck and good lifting.

Joe Marksteiner

Source; Original-Unofficial USAPL Forum

Team Ivanko Wins 2008 PW Fantasy Season
by Powerlifting Watch

The 2008 Fantasy Powerlifting Season has ended. The criteria used to put the teams together were based on top lifter totals from 2008 which were then evaluated on:

• The totals themselves.
• The level of the meet in which they were achieved.
• Head to head competition.

A lifter can only appear in one weight class per equipment type. During this span of time, "he increased the World Record in the squat by 100lbs from 903lbs to 1003lbs and increased the Total record from 2204 to 2309lbs." (quote from Critical Bench interview)

On December 9, 2004, after an eight year absence, Kirk totaled 2066 in the AAU world Championship held in Laughlin, NV, wearing only a lifting belt. Marty Gallagher wrote the following account;

On December 9th, 2004 I assisted Kirk Karowski when he totaled 2066 in the three power lifts wearing nothing but a lifting belt. It was a retro-throwback powerlift festival staring Captain Kirk Karwoski in his first public lifting appearance in eight years. Physically he has never looked better: he lifted in the 242-pound class and was shredded and ripped. Through a combination of muscle maturity and low body fat, his arms and legs rippled and roiled with every step. Like a lifting Ulysses, Kirk had been away from powerlifting for nearly a decade and everything changed in the interim. At this competition, the AAU world championship held in Laughlin, Nevada, Kirk went backwards in time and rather than gear up' decided to gear down.' He made eight out of nine lifts and started things off with a squat exhibition. In staggering succession he made 749, 804 and finally an explosive 826-pound effort. He wore a loose tee shirt and a wrestling singlet. Kirk experienced a severe thigh pull on his final squat with 826. On the previous 804 he barely averted a total wipeout. He lost concentration and tension on the descent for a split-second and his lapse caused him to be pushed downward past his normal turnaround point. He caught himself and through sheer willpower and guts pushed 804 to completion. His post-lift analysis was that he had set up' with his feet slightly narrow. This gut-buster lift took a lot out of him and the selection of 826-pounds was conservative. Had the 804 gone the way it should, 840 would have been the realistic 3rd attempt. The 826 actually went a whole lot better than 804. As Chuck Deluxe would say using another of his endless football analogies, Kirk jus needed to get the snot knocked out of him to clear his head.

Karwoski took the 826 down quickly and exploded it upward from 3-inches below parallel to ¾'s erect when his vastus internus on his right thigh tore. He actually heard a noise. He recalled that, I heard it {the thigh muscle} go pop' but I was through the sticking point and I was not going to lose this weight after getting past the hard part. This lift was a thing of beauty; pure athletic poetry in motion, 8-and-a-quarter squatted deep and explosive by a guy weighing 240 and wearing a lifting belt and nothing else. This was as fine a lift as I'd ever witnessed by anyone anywhere. In the bench press Kirk made an explosive 446 opener and a fine 463 second before experiencing his only miss of the entire competition: a 479 3rd attempt bench press. He had trained hurt. I had been nursing a torn rotator cuff for the last ten weeks. It was a work-related injury, nothing to do with training and before injuring it I had bench pressed 500 with a pause without a shirt. Kirk said. I had hoped for a double body weight 480-pound bench press. This was not to be. The deadlift would be touch and go on account of the thigh injury. He decided to dramatically curtail the number of deadlift warm-ups. Julie Scanlon and myself, his handlers, applied ice to the injury but it would be anyone's guess if he would be able to deadlift effectively. He felt confident of being able to pull 705 regardless how bad the leg hurt. The competition was dragging on and on and on and fatigue was becoming a real factor. His opening 705 deadlift felt better than his final warm-up. His second attempt with 749 felt better than 705. The thigh injury would not a factor but fatigue might be his undoing. Kirk took his first squat at 10 am and pulled his final successful deadlift, 771-pounds, at 7pm, a full nine hours later.

IPF News:

Tested Lifters- The modular format of the workshop offers a core 3-hour training program that can be extended up to a full day with the inclusion of ‘à la carte’ optional modules.

The workshop is designed so that most of its content is delivered interactively, through scenario analyses, problem-solving and small group discussions. Workshop participants will hone their awareness of an elite coach’s roles and responsibilities with respect to doping-free sport; increase their knowledge of applicable regulations and of issues relevant to their context and athletes; and benefit from useful reference materials for doping-prevention.

The Tool Kit provides all the necessary tools to stage the workshop, from its promotion to its evaluation, including an Organizer Guide, Facilitator Guidelines, a slide presentation with speaking notes, audiovisual material, a Participant Workbook as well as numerous reference documents and practical handouts.

Click here to view handouts and read more.

From At Large Nutrition-Why is Nitrean so popular?
by Chris Mason (AtLargeNutrition)

Why is it superior to any whey-only protein supplement?

Nitrean’s advantage lies in its unique blend of proteins. Nitrean utilizes a protein matrix consisting of 3 fractions of whey of which isolate is the primary (and also the most prevalent form of protein in the product), casein, and egg albumin. These proteins are combined in specific ratios to ensure optimum amino acid delivery over a prolonged period of time which results in a superior net retention.

The bottom line is that Nitrean’s protein blend provides for superior net retention. WADA thoroughly reviewed each organization's anti-doping rules & testing programmes, in a process extending throughout 2008.

As the recognized Anti-Doping Organization for Powerlifting, the IPF was reviewed by WADA. The outcome was that then IPF was found to be compliant with the Code & also to be conducting drug-testing programme. This was in contrast to a number of sport federations & testing agencies, which received comprmised or qualified assessments.

In recent years the IPF has marshalled extensive resources in its fight against drugs in Powerlifting. It is most gratifying for our federation to receive this acknowledgement from WADA, the universal agency leading the war on drugs in sport.

The IPF will not be complacent in continuing it s anti-doping work. We will continue to advance our performance in legislation, testing & detection, enforcement & education as the key components for achieving a level playing field in Powerlifting.

Link here for the WADA report.

IPF News:

Lifter Rankings- 2008 Updated

Powerlifting Watch Adds World Power Rankings:
by Jon

Effective November 1, 2008, Powerlifting Watch began tracking and compiling Power Rankings for lifters from around the world. The Powerlifting Watch Power Rankings is a ranking of the top totals from the prior year, after adjusting for weight class and federation rule differences. Like the existing American Power Rankings, the new World Power Rankings include an equipped and a raw set of rankings.

From Critical Bench:

Interview With Exceptional Bench Presser Jeremy Hines
As told to CriticalBench.com by Curt Dennis Jr. "The Brute" of Planetrage.com - December 2008

JEREMY HINES...there is only one word that comes to mind when that name is mentioned...BEAST. He's pretty much in the shadows a lot and not many have heard of him. How about this? A 500 raw bench at the age of 20!! I don't think I've heard many that have that gift and being that strong that quickly! A 765 raw deadlift to go along with it and this kid isn't close to his potential and has yet to show the world what he's really made of! He trained out of his basement where a lot of freaks and monsters seem to. Who and What is this person, right? Well...read on below...

Critical Bench: Hey, thanks for doing this interview. Please introduce yourself.

Hi my name is Jeremy Hines. I am 6'2 and I am around 270 pounds! I am 22 years old and I am currently in college to become a PTA (physical therapist assistant) with hopes of becoming a physical therapist one day. I live with my fiancé Ashley and two year old daughter Jade! I have been lifting weights since age 11 and powerlifting/lifting weights in general is my favorite way to spend my time. There is nothing more satisfying to me than lifting!

Critical Bench: What are some of your PR's?

My best gym lifts are a raw touch and go bench of 560, 630 squat (belt only), and a 765 Deadlift. I have not competed for a year in a half, but I am looking forward to getting back into competition and putting up some big raw benches and totals! My best raw bench in a competition is 500 from June of 2007. I also benched 630 shirted at 19 years old weighing 235 in the APF. At 6'2 235 Lbs is skinny!!!! I believe that 630 shirted lift is still a teenage all time record for the 242's!

Critical Bench: How long have you been into powerlifting?

Wow ! I have been training the three powerlifts for about 6 years. I have been benching since age 11. I have been doing bench and deadlift competitions for the past fives years on and off. I really cannot wait to get back into competition!

Read more here!

The Maryland Powerlifting Report 12/4/08

Meet Information:

2008 USAPL Virginia State Powerlifting Championships
December 6, 2008
Stanardsville, VA

Flights

Roster-(Updated 12/3/08)

World Powerlifting Federation- 10th Annual Congress

Representatives from 10 member nations attended. I apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced during the move. This means that parking is going to be nonexistent due to the fact that wrestling gets priority over powerlifting (at the Naval Academy, Wrestling is varsity...powerlifting is club). It is advised that people park somewhere down the street from Gate 1, or in downtown Annapolis. The parking situation was discussed with senior leadership at Navy and that was what was advised.

For entry into Gate 1, walking or driving, everyone must have valid identification (driver's license).

Maps and Directions are on this web page:USAPL Maryland

Also, stay tuned for flights. This means that parking is going to be nonexistent due to the fact that wrestling gets priority over powerlifting (at the Naval Academy, Wrestling is varsity...powerlifting is club). An application for the event can be found here: www.usaplnationals.com/2009-wome... index.html

I would like to begin by stating the volunteers of USA Powerlifting – Florida are very excited about hosting this year’s championship.

I have placed this year's championship in a location with the highest possible degree of activities for you and your family members. The hotel and venue are located just 10 minutes away from both South Beach and Bayside Marketplace -- two of the most popular attractions Miami has to offer. Information pertaining to these two “Hot” tourist spots can be found at the following web-links: South Side Beach and Bayside Marketplace

The equipment for the championship will be of international calibre, and will include six [6] ER/Combo squat/bench press racks from Denmark, and six [6] sets of calibrated Ivanko bars/weights. This equipment will be used both on the competition platform and in the warm-up area. A computerized scoring system shall be used to direct and calculate the individual and team scoring for the championship. The Florida Gulf Coast University Powerlifting Team will be handle the spotting/loading and are the fastest and best loaders in the game.

Key and important, the championship will be drug-tested in accordance with USAPL/IPF standards. IPF Referees will be in attendance for lifters to set both World and American records. In addition, if you require powerlifting gear, commercial sellers will be available with the most up-to-date equipment to accommodate your specific needs.

As a kind and gentle reminder, please be aware of the deadlines AND Group Code, to make your hotel reservations. It is VERY important that you make your reservations early, as this is high season for tourism in Miami! The competition will be held on President's Day Weekend, which are the same dates as the Miami International Boat Show [largest in the world], so if you miss the deadline, locating a hotel room, in and outside of Miami, for a reasonable price, will be quite difficult.

Information pertaining to the boat show can be found here: Miami Boat Show

If you have any questions regarding this championship, or if I can be of further assistance, I can be reached via e-mail: rhk@verizon.net or by: 954.790.2249 -- I am here to answer all of your questions.

To close, on behalf of USA Powerlifting, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you much success with your training for this competition and look forward to seeing you at the championship in Miami!

Sincere regards,
Robert Keller
Contest Director
2009 USAPL Women’s National Powerlifting Championships

The Maryland Powerlifting Report 11/5/08

A Note From Sioux-z:

Sioux-z Hartwig-Gary is currently in Canada competing in her 10th IPF World Championships. But, it has me wondering; what about the Michael Jordan of powerlifting, Kirk Karwoski?

In reviewing the notables currently in the HOF and not including the class of '08, 19 officials, 7 women (1 has been disqualified) and 12 men have received that honor and recognition.

The following guidelines for selection are posted at the IPF website;

There shall be an honorary body titled the "IPF Hall of Fame". Its purpose shall be to honour members who have made an outstanding contribution either by way of lifting achievement or service in general to the sport of powerlifting internationally. A maximum of two lifters and one official may be elected to the Hall of Fame each year but with the added proviso that not more than two men and one woman may be elected in any one year. A certificate of achievement will be awarded. No one who has been involved in drug offences or has been suspended by drug abuse shall be proposed to Hall of Fame. Any lifter or official previously awarded Hall of Fame will loose this distinction if suspended by IPF due to doping abuse.

The Executive decides prior to the IPF Congress, after having received bids from the member nations, whom will be awarded Hall of Fame. The appointed person(s) will be honoured at the Congress.

When I think about how this sport was built on the exploits and accomplishments of lifters, it causes me to wonder why there is such a disproportionate number of officials in the HOF to that of lifters. And why there isn't a greater effort to make sure that at least a lifter is inducted into the HOF each year.

Captain Kirk tribute video

IPF Championships on You Tube:

The IPF World Championships are currently being simulcast at You Tube. The new Money Meets is a sub-section of the Powerlifting Meets section and will include meets with at least $1,000 in prize money. Meet directors should note the total prize money which will be awarded in their meet listing to be considered for this section.

As this is a new section, there may be some meets that will offer prize money which are not yet listed. Please email me with that information and I'll get your meet added. When submitting a new meet, please note the total prize money and, if possible, the prize money distribution.

Money meets will also be listed in the regular Upcoming Meets section.

I hope this section proves to be helpful to both competitors and fans alike.

IPF News:

New Look website- In launching their new look website, the IPF has issued the following statement;

The delegates of the IPF congress 2009 voted for a facelifting of their international federation at 2nd November in St. John's/Canada. IPF President Detlev Albrings explained: “After my election as new president one year ago in Soelden/Austria, our executive team started to work very close with a German agency for communication management. Its CIO and head consultant Patrick Ries, formerly also active in Olympic sports management, pointed us how valuable our sport is in reality. We’ve known that powerlifting is a great sport by our own for a longer time. But know we’re going forward on a good way to show it more and attentively to public as well as to evolve the organisation of our communication, championship management and sponsoring more professional.”

The official kick off is set with the new logo and the new website. Next steps will follow to improve the internal and external communication via website, newsletter and IPF magazine “The International Powerlifter”.

USAPL News:

Arnold Sports Festival (March 6-8, 2009, Columbus, OH)- Rankings have been finalized for the following events; Titan Pro Bench, GNC Pro Deadlift and Con-Cret Raw Challenge. By measures such as a vigorous out-of-competition testing programme, target testing & athlete education the IPF has turned around the doping issue in its sport.

The new Code & Rules will further strengthen the IPF's hand in dealing with doping. Measures such as more clearly defining the Whereabouts criteria & mandatory provisional suspensions will tighten detection & deterrence, whilst the streamlining of Therapeutic Use Exemptions will allow for a greater focus of resources on front-line anti-doping activities. Flexible sanctions, taking into account all the features of particular cases, will promote fairness & credibility for the IPF’s anti-doping system.

The 2009 IPF Anti-Doping Rules will take effect on 1st January next.

Robert Wilks, Chair Anti-Doping Commission

USAPL News:

2009 Arnold Sports Festival Logo Contest- by Priscilla Ribic

Got a creative side? Things are looking great for both meets with 20 people committed by having already sent in their entries or told me they are in the mail. We have 15 males with every male having pulled 640 pounds in a full meet, more than 10 having pulled 700 or more in copmpetition, 7 pulling 750 or more, and 2 pulling 800 or more. We ahve about 5 females with every one pulling 2.9 times their bodyweight or more and most of those were in ful meets.

Here is the hotel info for the NOTLD. I have secured rooms for $59.99 per night (plus tax of course) at the Comfort Inn in Johnson City, TN. The phone number is (423) 928-9600. The address is 1900 S. Roan St. Johnson City, TN 37601. You must mention my name, Alex Campbell, and it would not hurt to say you were with the Night of the Living Dead. This hotel is about 5 miles from the meet site and has restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, etc, all within walking distance and is just a couple of hundred yards off of Interstate 26. Lifters have stayed here in the past and recommended it as a nice hotel for the price.

If you prefer, there is another hotel, the Traveler’s Inn in Elizabethton TN, that is within walking distance of the meet site and within easy walking distance of many restaurants, grocery stores, etc. The phone number is (423) 543-3344. The address is 505 W. Elk Ave. Elizabethton, TN 57643. We could not work out a room discount, but it is only $69 for a weekend rate. It does have a free continental breakfast. I did have lifters stay there last year and say it was fine for the price. I just wanted people to know that this is an option if you did not have a car or wanted a closer hotel, etc.

Neither of these hotels have been used as meet hotels before, and we are hoping that both of these will offer every lifter some option that make them the most comfortable.

USPF News:

Affiliation with the GPC- Courtney Stanley announced the following;

There are many virtues of having a Federation that embraces both Multi-ply lifters and the Single-ply lifters. The GPC and USPF both believe in credible lifting with reasonable gear rules. Both Feds have similar rules and equipment standards, with the notable exception of the number of ply's allowed. Both require closed back shirts......Both allow Mono-Lifts...Both enforce strict rules of performance that contribute to, Lifting Performance Credibility. The bottom line is more lifters at future USPF/GPC Meets.
Meet director's now have the option of running a "Two Platform" Meet. Lifters can enter in"Stream A" and conform to USPF Single-ply requirements...or Lift in "Stream B" and conform to GPC requirements of performance. There can be Monolifts used for both standards or have Squat Stands on one side and a Monolift on the other. It's actually a very flexible plan that allows Meet Directors considerable latitude. It also allows lifters latitude to persue the type of lifting they feel confortable with. This "style" of lifting is already being utilized in Europe....with other Federations with Multiple Standards.

The Federation feels that attendance at meets will only INCREASE with these options.
I might also point out that the GPC has a very large well established International footprint, that can co-exist well with the WPF.......30 + Countries to be exact.

This beginning is indeed very exciting. We are headed down a path that we feel will significantly impact the numbers of lifters in our meets, and expose to the Powerlifting Community, that indeed there is broad range of lifters who will be enthusiastic about USPF/GPC Meets.

We also welcome American GPC members into the USPF umbrella of Meet Directors and State Chairs. You guy's will now have many more opportunities to compete and form a US National team.....that will compete at GPC Worlds.

There is much work to do regarding implementation
of this arrangement...Fortunately we have some of the most experienced administrators in Powerlifting to help....Bob Packer is a great asset to help with the Multi-ply world and the World of Monolifts...and Dave Jeffrey is certainly experienced at all types of Powerlifting events.

From APT:

Alan from APT Pro Lifting Gear 15 Aug 2008
Please read carefully to collect your Gift Gear

New Products added,........MANY new Excellent Products
New Products

15% off & a F*R_E^E set of 12" Wrist Wraps and 1-1/2" wide Basic Lifting Straps
(No minimum order amount) (Do not add the free gear to your cart, we'll just send it)
(This offer expires when you stop using it,...so keep using it and we'll keep it active)

1- Use the discount code of 2FREE (no space in code) in the "Discount Code Area"
when checking out online. Store

2- In the "Comments" section tell us what set of 12" Wrist Wraps you want by NAME.
(Does not include the 2XH or 3XH wrist wraps)

If you place at least a $50 order (not including S/H & discount) we'll send you a 20" or 24"
set of Wrist Wraps instead of a 12" set.
